Need more screen space, a simple way to get it

OK things are getting a bit crowded on the 9" screen. Try the following.

Apologies to everyone who knows this already.

Assuming you have enabled advanced mode.

Right click the desktop,
then select - "settings", "Workspaces Settings".

Workspaces and settings window will appear.
Set the number of workspaces to four, then close the window.

I rebooted the One, but I don't think you have to.

Once the One has restarted you will see nothing different, just the normal home screen.
Run the web browser, let it display a page.
Now hold the control key down and press F2 - The browser window appears to have disappeared, it has not.
Now hold down, control, alt and del, the system monitor should open, click on the resources tab.
Now hold the control key down and press F3 - The system monitor window appears to have disappeared, it has not.

I won't bore you with the rest, run a program and then use the control key and the next Function key.

When you hold control and either F1, F2, F3 or F4 you switch to a different workspace, neat huh ?

Now you have to be aware that there are more things running than you can see, makes a reboot a bit scary

For change worckspaces, I use the "side-pointer switcher" option*, very usefull.

*find it in Window manager setting, on 4th tab.

Yes very useful, I prefer the pointer reaching an edge to trigger the change, dragging windows can be a pain on the small touchpad.

Any way to show which workspace I am in?
The xfce panel should do this but I think Acer killed it.

Usually, in other linux's distro, i use a fine plugin for panel named "pager", but acer had cripted it :x

You can add the pager plugin to panel by running command:

xfc4-panel -a

from terminal or from run-dialog (Alt-F2). This pops up the "Add Items to the Panel" window and you can find the pager item from the list.

Unfortunately the panel is some how locked and you cant organize the panel items simply from the gui. However the order of items can be changed by editing file ~/.config/xfce4/panel/panels.xml. First you have to shutdown the panel with command:

xfce4-panel -x

Then edit the file with for example mousepad by command:

mousepad ~/.config/xfce4/panel/panels.xml

Sort the <item> lines as you wish and save the file.

Then start the panel again with command:

xfce4-panel

The panel cant be running while editing the configuration file because it seems to overwrite the changes at shutdown.

Thanks, I didn't notice the drag'n'drop posibility here.

However it's a shame that right click on panel items is disabled (the normal way for example moving) , because then it's not possible to change the settings of some plugins. If someone knows a fix for this it would be nice to know. I'll try to look into this when I have more time.
