Keyboard help needed please

Hi

After downloading a software update (from right click on adv. desktop) my keyboard map changed to default in UK English after startup, as my keyboard is a US English this is very frustrating. I can toggle between US and UK with a small blue icon on the taskbar but can someone please explain how I can set default to US.
I even tried using a recovery from USB but I cant get this to work either! the One tries to read the USB for a few minutes then just starts up as normal

Any help gratefully received.........thanks!

(Heard Dell was shipping its PC-line with LTS Ubuntu 8.04 as of this week - at least it should be more stable and tested thoroughfully with all locale variants!...
Should take example.)
