Just purchased a Aspire one Acer but having trouble connecting.

When I boot up, the icon is there recognizing the network (Airport 'bfae61') but after it comes up and I hit "connect" it never finds it. I know the router is working because it is communicating with my other laptop.

If I right click on the wireless icon and go to 'repair' it says it cannot connect to the network, and contact the person who manages your network - that would be me!

Tried disabling ethernet controller and also ran "Winsockxpfix" with no success.

    Any ideas?

Try it with no encryption/security on the wireless router.

Yes, depending on the router the wireless encryption can be a bit hit'n'miss.
I use a Conexant ADSL wifi router but the Linpus drivers work fine with WEP 128bit passphrase but for Ubuntu and Fedora I need to change to WEP 64bit key.
So I think it is a linux driver problem.
My AAO with Windows XP drivers everything is fine in any mode of WEP.

When I substitute the Atheros card with the Dell 1390 in my other AAO with OSX then this works fine with 128bit key and passphrase.

My Macbook Pro can use either modes flawlessly.

I had a heck of a time with the Netgear Router at our clubhouse. It would only function under wep encryption. No other router seems to have this problem that I use.

You don't have a functioning name server.

    Start/settings/control panel/network connections
right click on the wireless icon/properties/internet protocol/properties/check "use the following DNS server adresses"
    fill in 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2.

This will fix it short term but the router is not supplying DNS configuration when you are connecting.
