Windows startup error. The error message is <Windows root>\s

    I have an Acer Aspire ZG5 with XP. It closed down ok last night but wont startup today. The error message is <Windows root>\system32\hal.dll Please reinstall a copy of the above file. How can i get to the restore partition on this machine or how do i reinstall this file?
