    Hi

    New to this forum.

I am sure you may have been asked this before, but, well, here we go................

What is the advantage of Windows 10 over Windows 7 that I am currently running?
Why is Microsoft so keen to give Windows 10 away?
Is this Windows 10 a complete version that you can run for good, or is there a catch?

    Thanks

Only Windows 8.1,and Windows 10 will be supported by Microsoft, Microsoft has finished giving security
,and system updates for all other versions.

Windows 10 free update will end being free from Aug 2016, it will cost over $119 or APPROX £80 from then on.

Some people like it, others are still undecided.

    Hi

So Windows has already stopped providing updates for Windows 7?
If I updated to Windows 10 now, will it remain free for good? In other words its not free for a year, and then start paying, or something like that?

Yes if you get the Windows 10 free update now that will remain yours free of charge.

Microsoft has announced that it will be supporting Windows 10 for over ten more years.

I've taken the plunge to upgrade to Windows 10 - and I like it. I really didn't enjoy Windows 8, but Windows 10 is much improved.

It's probably free as they'll make money once people start to buy apps via the App Store, plus Windows 8 was so unpopular they had to do something to change opinions.

I have a second laptop, an HP Pavillion notebook running W7 Home Premium. Its about 8 years old. I tried downloading W10 from Microsoft on it. The window appears showing a choice of Upgrade or Download and Upgrade Later. I tried the Upgrade later choice. Another window appears briefly showing a download has begun, then vanishes. Nothing is happening, no download is taking place. Tried the Upgrade now choice. Same thing happens. No download is occurring. Any ideas? I understand the download is about 3GB, but there appears to be zero transfer of data going on. Task Manager shows nothing is happening.

Two things, have you tried looking at the update section of windows 7
go to the start button, and type update

Has a new icon appeared in the task bar if so click on it.

The other way is to go to this link, and download it from there.

I sincerely see no difference between windows 10 and windows 7 or 8. It is just that people tend to advance in technology and none wants to be left behind. I am using windows 10 because it's the latest version.

I honestly prefer Windows 7 over all those new versions, sadly my old laptop broke and had to buy a new one :( A Windows 8 one, but to be honest I prefer Windows 7 over Windows 8.1. I haven't taken the chance to check Windows 10, but from what I heard I'm not missing much. I have decided I'll wait until this laptop dies and I buy a new one, then I will have no choice but use Windows 10. Hopefully by then all those bugs will be sorted out.

If you really like windows 7 then why not format the current laptop you own that runs on windows 8 and install windows 7?

Honestly, I didn't like Windows 10 when I downloaded it (I'm back to 8.1). There were so many problems but my main one was that my Wifi stopped working. I thought maybe it was just a computer issue but this happened to four other people I knew who had downloaded Windows 10. It was ridiculous and no one was able to fix it so I just went back to windows 8.

Your Ethernet connection should still work under Windows 10

Download this program “driver booster” it will find all the compatible Windows 10 driver files.

    http://www.freewarefiles.com/search.php?query=driver+booster&B1.x=0&B1.y=0&boolean=exact

My wifi needed to be reset when I moved to Windows 10, when you try to update to windows 10 again, in the control panel uninstall all of the network adaptors programs, by
right clicking on each one, then restart your laptop.

I'm considering making the jump and upgrading from 7, but I worry that it will brick my already quite ropey old laptop. Is there any way I could find out if my laptop can handle the new operating system?

Here's a question which as a naive user of modern technology, I am not sure what the genuine answer should be - If I continued using W7 instead of upgrading to W10, and Microsoft stopped supporting W7, what exactly does this mean? It doesn't mean that W7 will suddenly stop working does it, and by now the bugs are sorted, so what possible downloads via Windows Update are going to be useful? Why shouldn't I just carry on using W7 without any problems?

On another note, tried downloading W10 via something back's link. Downloaded (took a couple of hours at least) and after all that, when installing a small window popped up saying Installation Failed! Didn't give a reason or any error code! I thought I might be able to re-install from the download, but even the download has disappeared. Not in Programs, or in Downloads, and no sign of anything in Control Panel. Any ideas? Thanks.

In the main windows updates try to alleviate known malware, and antivirus type attacks,
types of attacks that can basically take control of your machine via machine code.

Simply put these type of attacks could be to advanced for normal antivirus programs to detect, the term are generally known as root kits.

Also Microsoft tries to fix it's own software faults.

Try again this time download the iso file route you will need to download the download tool first.

The download process takes about one hour, the installation part takes again about one hour,so two hours in total.

    Hi

Not sure I understand what you mean by the 'iso file route' and the 'download tool'.

No problem, I should have been a bit more specific given you told me
you are a little new to this computer lark.

By the way an .i.s.o. File is a compressed large file.

Using this link again scroll down to the part that lists a download tool then click on it.

When the file has been downloaded click on it,accept the Microsoft agreement, and
choose either "update this computer direct" in the menu, you also have the option to download
a 3gb file this is the iso file.

You could use the iso file to write a dvd, and use it as a backup/recovery or reinstallation disk.

I have done some homework. It appears that it was a happy accident that W10 did not install. I have discovered that W10 is nothing more than a data collecting machine which then is able to distribute personal details to interested parties. No wonder its free! Apparently you can't opt out of automatic Updates, so Microsoft can send what they want to you. No thanks! Not for me!

Your are choosing to believe FUD and clearly don't understand operating systems or the technology in general. You homework should include valid sources, and apparently it doesn't by your conclusion.
