    I've got 3 choices...

    1. I buy one with XP.
    2. I buy one with Vista, and the free upgrade to Windows 7.
    3. I Buy one with Vista, and stick with it.

I've looked up ratings, and I can't decide. I am a student, and will be using the PC for lots of web browsing, as well as making word documents and slideshow presentations. I also plan to play some mid-range games such as TrackMania, and Project Torque.

    Thanks in advance.

Personally, I'd get the cheaper version with Windows XP and keep XP on it for as long as you own the computer. There are very few benefits to having Windows Vista or Windows 7 on a netbook. And besides, performance under windows XP will be a little better.

If, however, you feel a need to have the latest and greatest operating system, you can always upgrade later.

I would go with windows xp. Proven drivers and lower demands on ram and processing. An, absolute, known sytem.

I don't understand what is so special with Windows 7 being able to place two windows side by side like in the image. I have been able to do that since Windows 3.1 and on all other window style OS's.

I would stay away from Vista. I have used it and found it is not as good as XP as far as I am concerned. Also it appears as though MS agrees with me since3 it is coming out with a replacement so soon kind of like they did with ME.

Whats that with slaggin' Windows ME ??? Windows ME is the BEST windows version EVER!!!!
Let me just repeat that :

Windows ME is the BEST windows version EVER!!!!

Yes, thats true. Windows ME was the Windows version so far, that influenced the highest number of existing windows users to migrate to alternative OS's such as MacOS, Linux and BSD. Therefore Windows ME is the best Windows version ever. Logical and simple ;)

yeah that always worked, but in Win7 you can just drag a window to the left or right side of your desktop. It will automaticly resize and arrange the window so it uses the half desktop. I like this feature very much.

    GrRst3r,

I would recommend trying the Windows 7 RC. I hated Vista, but Microsoft has done well with 7. It's free right now and will give you some time to determine whether you like it or not.

If you go the Windows 7 route, I would recommend turning off the Aero stuff because it does slow things down.

How do windows xp vs. windows 7 compare regarding cpu/memory resources?

    Dude,
your insight, verbal brilliance and analytical skills obviously puts all the rest of us to shame. However, there is a SLIGHT chance that someone else actually knew what they were buying and didn't mistake a netbook for a file-server. We have understood your objection points:

    * The CPU, unless overclocked, is 25-30% slower than regular 1,6GHz netbooks.
    * The same limitation means that flash-based HQ/HD youtube videos are slow or unwatchable
    * When believing that the word "netbook" translates to "good candidate for a file-server park", it does not perform too well.

However, at release time it gave 65% more screen estate than any other netbook, while simultanously being lighter and having more battery runtime than most of them. AND doing h264-decode in hardware. For on-the-go videos, surfing and working that is pretty much unbeatable.

    On topic:
I've used both XP and Win7. Win7 obviously looks best, and works OK. However, XP is a little bit snappier, and uses a bit less resources. I'm sticking to XP until the GMA500 driver support in Win7 becomes better than XP...which I guess is bound to happen sooner or later.

I got the netbook with Vista on it and it was sluggish, even after updating the bios and drivers. I just recently wiped and installed Windows 7 and it seems to run quicker- probably closer to XP speeds. So avoid Vista or at least get the vista with the 7 upgrade.
