    Hi,

With the announcement that Google are to abandon older browsers http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-13639875 and the launch of Chromebooks http://www.linuxfordevices.com/c/a/News/Samsung-and-Acer-Chromebooks-analyzed/?kc=rssat the end of this month I am wanting to get my trusty Aspire One up to speed. In August 2008 I bought an Acer Aspire One A150-Ab Netbook, Linpus Linux Lite version, 1GB DDR2 RAM, 120GB HD (Sapphire Blue). It has worked beautifully. Later on I put Opera on it as a browser. I also managed to put Skype on it too. But now I think I need to move to a different distribution of Linux.

Thanks to this forum I found the link to a post by Mark Greaves showing how to install Firefox 4 on an Acer Aspire One which I followed and it worked perfectly http://linuxforums.org.uk/netbooks/...an-acer-aspire-one-running-linpus-lite-linux/ (Mark Greaves - you really are a star!!). So the Google problem has gone away for the moment. But Linpus Lite for Meego is meant to be available - although I cannot seem to find a download for it anywhere http://www.linpus.com/products_meego_net.html. Will this run on my Acer Aspire One A150-Ab Netbook and if so where can I get it?

Alternatively what would the members of this forum recommend and where are there instructions for installing it? I presume that I will download something on another computer, put it onto a USB stick and then enter some commands so that it boots from the USB stick. Before then I suppose I will need to back-up all the stuff I have written on the Aspire One over the years as this will get zapped.

    regards

    AK

You do not have to run a minimal or crippled operating system on that machine. Mine has the same specs and I've run full-blown os with no problem. Its just a matter of deciding what you need to do.
I've been quite happy with Mint and Ubuntu mainly because software is easy to find and install.
The new Lubuntu 11.04 is very nice. I've also found Puppy linux to be blazingly fast on this machine but finding software and updates can be frustrating.

Unetbootin can download and install to usb many linux flavours.

    Thanks for this.

I am wondering whether I could turn my old netbook into a Chromebook - basically a small version of the Acer Chromebook http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/11/google-unveils-acer-chromebook-349/. Instead of built in mobile 3G I could use a HUAWEI E585 MiFi MOBILE WiFi BROADBAND ROUTER which you can get on 3 http://www.three.co.uk/Mobile_Broadband/MiFi.

I like the idea of saving working documents to the web but I still want to have the full Open Office suite available to me. Spreadsheets in Chrome Docs never seem to play nice. But I presume that I could set such a system up so that it worked with DropBox http://www.dropbox.com/help/category/Linux

    regards

Take a look at Peppermint Ice. It performs pretty much exactly this. I have it on a One ZG5, and it is blazingly fast and stable.
Download it from half way down this page.
