After spending some days fiddling around with usb_modeswitch, vodaphone connection manager etc. etc. I have finally cracked it far easier than I thought.

First downloaded and installed a 1.0.8 image (I was originally running 1.0.6). Then downloaded and manually installed NetworkManager108.sh from http://update.linpus.com/ACER/AspireOne/v1.0.8/

Stuck the Usb in, Icon 225 on Orange Uk, put in "internetvpn" and away we go. That was it!

Image downloaded and installed from http://www.dailycupoftech.com/2008/09/0 ... sb-device/

    Hurrah!!

100% sure of this. Just tried it with the 225 Icon usb nothing else..

Just for info I am the systems manager at a college in the north of England. I am bl**dy pleased about this as I have 130 aspire ones to roll out to our year 7's all with 3g modems.

Just did this late yesterday. Am going to go through the process again today and will provide screenshots.

Should be doing this in a couple of hours.

Just went through the whole process again to test.

    Restored the image again.

    Put on the NetworkManager108.sh

Rebooted and the screen has gone corrupt!!! Redoing this again.

Regarding internetvpn, as soon as I put the icon 225 in the port the 3g configuration screen appeared. "internetvpn" is the name of my network on orange. However it did not give me an option in network manager to add a 3g connection or edit the one it put in automatically when I first inserted the stick.

All academic at the moment if I can't replicate what I did first (it was only two stepss!!!). Just restoring again now.

    Ok,

Did a restore from the image I downloaded as above. Fine.

Put on NetworkManager108.sh as above. Fine.

Removed network cable and restarted. Fine.

    Inserted Orange icon 2252.jpg[/attachment:2j98deml]

    Click on Yes1.jpg[/attachment:2j98deml]

Put my APN "internetvpn" in and it connected.

Please note the following however. It does not allow you to manually add a connection in Network manager. If you go to add a connection it does not give the 3g option. It does however allow you to edit the connection it created automatically above.

I am assuming that this is because NetworkManager108.sh puts in the 3g support and the two other files in the update, that is NM_option0025.sh and NM_option0025v2.sh, may then update network manager to give a link to the 3g applet. I will be testing that this pm to see what happens.

It may well be that the option 225 that I am using is recognised automatically but the ones you are using may not be.

Hope that is of some help.

    Chris.

On further experimenting the version number is a red herring.

Using another machine with Linpus version 1.06 I installed the NetworkManager106.sh and I got the same automatic connection on inserting the icon 225.

As soon as I insert the icon 225 it sees it and takes me to the configuration screen. It would appear to me that your modem might not be supported.

I have just done the relevant live update and it still doesn't give me the option to add a 3g connection manually (doesn't matter to me as the applet pops up as soon as put the modem in) but I am puzzled as to why this support exists in the background but is not linked into Network Manager?

    hum... odd...

I'll stick the 1.0.8 on it anyway as it's the most upto date and see what happens.
