After using pup several times I have stopped my desktop from loading correctly. I tried changing from xfdesktopnew to the xfce desktop and it makes no real difference. All I get is a corrupt background (different depending on the desktop I attempt to run). Also the shutdown on the panel doesn't work now, I'm having to use sudo to get the system to shutdown

Any ideas how I can get back to the standard desktop?

I had the same problem.. The solution is to reinstall Linpus from CD, and use only Acer's own updater..

Using packet manager to update components is no no...
