Apparently I erred in installing the software from a USB stick while the USB Mouse was connected. The touch pad will not work even though Preferences>Mouse>Enable Touch is checked. Is there a command line statement that will turn on the touch pad and let the USB mouse work if it is connected?

are you referring to the karmic koala daily build? mouse clicks on touchpad still does not work. the 9.04 should work out of the box

The release I have is 9.04(jaunty)
    Kernel Linux 2.6.28.13-generic
    GNOME 2.26.1
If I boot from the USB stick (without the mouse) the touch pad works fine. However, since I installed it while the mouse was in place, only the mouse works and not the touch-pad.

    can you post your xorg.conf?

    also
try booting in without your usb mouse
    ctrl+alt+f1 for command prompt
    login
    sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
    dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

reboot...your trackpad should work...login, then plug in your usb mouse
