I am looking for some kind of XP software tool that lets me toggle wifi/wlan on and off.
I tried A1CTL and it does what I need, however, it comes along with some other limitations.
So does anybody know of some software that lets me switch wifi on and off?

Why not just use the switch on the front? :?:

You'll need windowsXP's wireless zero configuration program. It's already installed on your computer. Right click the wireless icon in the icon tray and click disable.

If you use the Atheros Client Utility to control the wireless card (rather than windows wireless zero confirguration), then you can quickly disable and re-enable the wireless card.

Just right click on the Atheros Client Utility in the system tray and choose 'disable radio'. To turn it back on, choose 'enable radio'.

Does this actually mean when the wifi stops working that you do not have to reboot?

As the wifi adapter does not even show in Device Manager Hardware.
i.e. it dissapears when it stops working.

It worked for disabling wireless, but the icon disappeared in the system tray.
In order to enable it again, I have to go to "Network Connections" in the "Control Panel" which is just too many clicks :(
How can I make to wireless icon NOT disappear once is disabled it?
The icon for LAN always stays in the system tray although it is not connected.

    Any ideas?

put a shortcut of the network adapter on the desktop.

When you want to disable the adapter, double click the short cut and click disable. When you want to enable it again, double click the shortcut and it'll enable the adapter.
