Software UpdAte problems

I lost my system while playing with antivirus software - rebuilding the system from USB recover stick worked well and all is up and running but I can't update the software. Trying to do so(using system / software updater) brings up the erreor message about failing to resolve dependencies and clicking on details gives the message 'notification-daemon-xfce conflicts with notify-daemon'. there is a long list of updates and packages but non refer to a package with that name or anything like it. In fact, deselecting all updates brings the same result. The net result is that no updates can be made until this is resolved!

Can anyone suggest anything?

 

OK So I repeated the re-instal and tried software updater again as soon as the system came up. Failed AGAIN BUT WITH A HOST OF DIFFERENT ERRORS. This is pretty weak fragile stuff.
