This is probably something best asked the experts at the insanelymac forum.

    Re: Snow Leopard - Anyone?

In fact I did, but it seems that no one had encounter the same kp I had...

And the debug info given is too little because it is still in the early stage of boot (acpi kexts are not even loaded yet)

I think this must have something to do with the Extensions.mkext, it keeps creating a new one even when I manually did this for SL under Leopard.

Snow Leopard 64 bit only (?)

Apple's marketing for OS/X 10.6 claims 64 bit computing throughout while allowing for support of 32 bit legacy applications. If the Snow Leopard kernel and base applications are all 64 bit, how will they run on a 32 bit Atom?

For that matter, how will they run on early Apple 32 bit only Core Solo and Core Duo boxes?

Make sure you read the SL spec *CAREFULLY*.

    http://www.apple.com/macosx/specs.html

64-bit support is classified under "feature-specific req", the same cat for time machine, etc.

Apple would never require you to use TM, right? ;)

    Re: Snow Leopard - Anyone?

I am not sure about that I thought I head something about 64 bits processor during the keynote but I might be wrong. But what I am sure of is that Snow Leopard will still be able to run 32 bits applications. I don't know if this comment helps in any way ;)

    Re: Snow Leopard - Anyone?

Snow Leopard works on every Intel Mac. You're right, the first Intel Macs had only 32 bit processors, so Snow Leopard must support 32 bit. At least this seems logical to me.

    Re: Snow Leopard - Anyone?

    hey everyone,

i just got snow kitty installed on my aoa! :D (actually i got it installed yesterday)

i had to repartition the hd into gpt (a must), and i got my kp resolved by typing "kextcache -update-volume /Volumes/blahblahblah/" in the terminal in the install disc

everything works (except sd card reader coz i haven't tested it, YET)

    Re: Snow Leopard - Anyone?

nah, i mean your partition's volume name, in my case is "Macintosh HD"

at least that's what i did...
i can't get it booted with mbr
and i guess you can use gptsync to make a mbr for a gpt hd so u can get xp on it...
    try googling "gptsync"
i have no interest in installing windows back on my rig ;)
    osx is way much cooler!

    Re: Snow Leopard - Anyone?

    Correct. The exact quote is:
So as I thought, the early Intel Macs (Mac Mini, iMac) that used a Core Solo or Core Duo are stuck with OS/X 10.5 and there's no hope of porting Snow Leopard to any of the current AAO models.

It's not unlike the advent of 10.5 that dropped support for many Mac G4 models and for all Mac G3 models. With 10.6, all PPC support will be gone as well as support for the 32 bit Intel boxes.

One could always buy a non-Apple 64 bit Intel machine. But I have heard from more than one source that Apple will lower the boom on Hackintosh cloners with new protection code in 10.6 that will access Apple specific hardware in all existing and future 64 bit Intel Macs.

    Re: Snow Leopard - Anyone?

    um...
    i don't think this is possible ;)
apple has already ordered an api code freeze for snow leo, and developers should be testing their apps in 10.6
apple has no reason to add anything after the code freeze (not even the marble interface :( ) to cause possible instability of the system

at least i got 10a380 installed without *much* problem
no matter what apple do, hackers can always find a way to "get thru" the prob!

    Re: Snow Leopard - Anyone?

If we read carefully, the 64 bit support requires a 64 bits processor. Snow Leopard doesn't require a 64 bits precessor. SP1950 demonstrated that by installing it on AA1.

    Re: Snow Leopard - Anyone?

Yes, however I recall that when 10.5 Leopard was in the pre-release stage there were reports that it would be supported in most PPC G3 models and all PPC G4 models. But when release day came, so did the news that many G4 models wouldn't be supported and that G3 support was dropped entirely.

And it's not just Apple branded 10.6 software; third party application producers may simplify their offerings to be 64 bit only.

We won't know for sure until Snow Leopard ships.

    Re: Snow Leopard - Anyone?

You got a point what is the purpose of having an OS installed on a machine with a 32 bits processor if most application require 64 bits processor. But I guess that software developers will still deliver 32+64 bits applications.

If I am not mistaken, in snow leopard applications like Mail are actually 32+64 bits.
