The right-hand touchpad button on my Acer Aspire One is not mounted as firmly as the left-hand one: when I press it lightly it "wiggles," unlike the left-hand button. Is this intentional or should the two buttons act identically?

Most of the 8.9" AA1s seem to be like this. I don't think that they were intentionally designed to be like this.

I suspect that if you look carefully at the front edge of your AA1 you will probably see that the plastic "tray" that surrounds the keyboard and accommodates the touchpad bows up slightly in the region of the right hand touchpad button.

I have improved this (slightly) on my AA1s by the judicious application of a very narrow strip of double sided adhesive tape (carpet tape) between the underside of the keyboard tray and the edge of the bottom case moulding.
