    Easy there fellers..
Read the spec on that CF to ZIF adapter:

Fully compatible with Compact Flash Type I, Type II and Microdrive

Just be certain it's compatible with the faster cards otherwise it might hobble the speed.

    hi guys
is it possible to connect 2 devices like this ?

mb --> zif cable --> cfadapter with cf card --> zif cable --> zif hdd

i want to use a fast cf card as system partition, but need extra space for storage therefore the hdd

BIOS shows an ide1 - so theoretically it should work ?

I'm confused, I've been told many times that the memory in the One was soldered in place, just like the RAM. Is this wrong?

andy53, one question. How did you remove the stock SSD? Wasn't it soldered?

Does the motherboard of the One need to be removed to replace the stock SSD, or can it stay in place? Can you point on an overall picture the exact location of the SSD, because it isn't so visable on your earlier posted pictures.

Does a ZIF HDD disk works with just the ZIF cable, or does it need an adictional one for power?

That's why you should never put too much stock in pre-release specs and rumors. What appears to be the truth is:

Memory: 512MB soldered on the top of the mobo, plus a SO-DIMM slot on the bottom that apparently will accept up to 1GB (but not easily accessed without major disassembly of the unit).

Storage: SSD removable, attached via ZIF connector.

    Hi andy53!
You did a great job! I would like to ask you some info about your hack.. Here in Italy right now isn't so easy to find a ZIF TO CF adapter.. so If I'll buy online I
wish I could buy the right model fully compatible with Acer One motherboard. So can you post please the exact model and manufacture (or do you think this is ok http://linitx.com/viewproduct.php?prodid=11676)? Also, in jkkmobile website the teach guy upgraded the 901 SSD with a ZIF HHD and ZIF TO CF adapter (http://jkkmobile.blogspot.com/2008/07/h ... ee-pc.html).. But he had to remove a part of plastic to fit the stuffs in. In the Acer One did you remove some plastic part or it just perfectly fit in the old SSD place? He also used a ZIF HHD model "toshiba mk3008gal" do you think those kinda 4200RPM drives are fast enough to run smoothly windows xp? Did you notice an improvement in battery life after your upgrade?
Sorry If I made a lot of questions, Thank you in advance for your reply!

Perhaps a cheaper solution is to use a 2GB CF card (266x and above) to hold the system and mount a 8GB class 6 SD card for home folder (and other folders if necessary).. This would give you 10GB of storage for the price and speed of a 4GB CF card..

Seems like a very good idea. Are there any 300X 2GB cards?

Thanx for you replies.. I checked the cf to zif solution but its out of stock now.. but looking at the picture I noticed that you cutted a part
    of the electrical circuit:

does it effect in anyway the adapter or the reliability? Or did you just drop the led power?

Hmm I'm definitely doing andy53's hack on my Aspire One once I get it, but I think it's important to know which UDMA mode is the system able to use with it. If it caps at a lower mode, a 300x speed is not fully used, and a 266x is a better buy...
Oh, and maybe this adapter can be better too, I wouldn't know how to attach it to the mainboard, though... http://cgi.ebay.it/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...o=CRX&its=S%2BI%2BSS&itu=ISS%2BUCI%2BSI&otn=4

This one is not a ZIF adapter, but a 1,8" IDE adapter. It won't work, IMHO.

Oh, I thought they were the same, since ZIF HDDs are 1,8", I'm kinda new to these tiny things! And there seems to be no 1,8 IDE to ZIF cable/adapter, or have I missed something? By the way, I'm still curious about the loss of performance that these adapters could bring and about the Aspire One's IDE specs...
