I have my copy of Windows 7 Home Premium on order, and I am looking forward to installing and using it.

That said, I have learned a long time ago any operating system upgrade needs some preparation. What should be done in preparing to go from XP Home to Windows 7 as far as what to back up? Will drivers be available for download if needed? I already know that a clean install will have to be done, and all programs will be needed to be reinstalled, and have started preparing that. Anything else?

I have a generic 250 GB hard drive which boots via the USB port. I use it to back up various laptops, desktops and now my netbook. Rather than just back up folders I find it better to do a complete disk image. I think I paid about £60 for this from Novatech, and it is a great way of backing up - every home should have one!

Just do a fresh install on a new partition and you will be fine

You should always do a fresh install when going to a new operating system. The only reason that Microsoft even offers a "upgrade" feature is for marketing purposes; its not a good option.
