Please can someone help, messed up files and folders!

Have been on to many forums, and have posted on here yesterday, however I am still struggling for help. Is there a way, I can set all of my files and folders back to default. Nothing is going into my documents folder, unless I copy it into there, and my downloads I have to specify each time, where I want them to go. Before, all of my documents went straight to my documents folder, and my downloads went straight to my downloads folder. I am thinking about a recovery, but being new to this, it's probably not wise :roll:
