Excellent! Once I installed the new fedora release package from the above link as instructed I installed without a problem. Thank you J.A.

Now, I need to figure out how to install Thunderbird 2.0.0.16 (Thunderbird 2.0.0.6 works fine though!).

    OK VLC installed OK.

But I have no sound when playing back videos. I have checked:

Speakers working OK (played MP3 files via MediaMaster with no issues)
The video *has* a sound track and it is not disabled
    VLC volume set to max
    Aspire volume set to max

    But no sound!

    Hints or suggestions?

    Jon

Anyone who wants to upgrade to the very latest version of vlc player 0.9.2, should first remove vlc-0.8.6i and vlc-core-0.8.6i using SYSTEM/ ADD/REMOVE programs. Vlc 0.9.2 requires 4 dependencies to be downloaded and installed. These are:-

    libswscale.so.0
    libgoom2.so.0
    libavformat.so.52
    libx264.so.60

Just use rpm search to locate these above 4 files, and ensure they're for fedora 8, ending in fc8.i386. Download them and double click to install (OR use the Terminal and shell commands to do it.)

Now find the program vlc-0.9.2-30.fc8.i386.rpm using rpm search (for fedora 8), and simply download to a folder on your AAO and double-click to install ( OR use the terminal and shell commands.)

My mistake. I tried to make it a step by step process... yet I left the last step out of it.

    10. Reboot.

Yep, the last patch for xfdesktop breaks any modifications you made, such as adding icons to your desktop. Javier, you need to edit and then save your desktop xfce4 configuration xml file again.

Is this just the kiosk/granny mode you're talking about, or the actual xfce desktop?
If the latter, where is the config file located?

    Enter in the terminal:
    sudo mousepad /home/user/.config/xfce4/desktop/group-app.xml

A text file in an editor window should pop up.

:!: Remember, you're at root here, so be careful with any modifications you make. :!: I'm just using adding the Skype icon as an example below.

Search for the Skype entry using "Find" in the text editor, as it's already listed as an icon but disabled with !-- after the first < and -- before the last > I believe it's line 45. Delete the !-- part both at the start and end of the line, so that the line begins with <app> and ends with </app>

Also, ensure that the ACTIVE desktop icon links are numbered sequentially (beginning with 0, I think, as in 0, 1,2,3,4, etc, depending on the number of desktop icon links you have), and make sure two active desktop icon links aren't numbered the same.

    Save the file, then reboot.

Ah, okay. Thanks. I had edited this before, to add Skype and vlc to the kiosk mode desktop. Given the limitations there, however, I don't really care about it anymore. The updates shouldn't affect the *desktop* desktop?

    Sorry about the continued threadjack.

Hi all. Im pretty new to the linux stuff. I have followed the instructions, and got the application installed, and unpacked in the terminal session. But after that im lost. I dont see any icon for it in the desktop listing under multimedia, the only options i see are media master, mplayer, photo master, and webcam . Im not even sure where the application is supposed to be installed, so i could try running it from there . Any help/advice most welcome

Test running it from the terminal (just type vlc)...if that works add a menu icon by going to the menu editor (under settings in the right click menu) , click add entry and for the command type vlc...add a icon image and position it in your menu. There you are done.

Plz can somebody maybe tell me what iam doing wrong. I have been trying to get vlc on my aspire one i have the 8g ssd model.

I follow the instructions but for some reason it never seems to connect to the internet via the terminal. I have it connected to the net via my wireless. connection.

    [user@localhost ~]$ su -
    Password:
    [root@localhost ~]# rpm -ivh http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release-8.rpm
    Retrieving http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release-8.rpm
error: skipping http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release-8.rpm - transfer failed - Unknown or unexpected error
    [root@localhost ~]#

Just love to get vlc working.

    Cheers
