I cannot get Aspire one to start without being connected to adapter plug. The battery says 100% charged and the manual mentions 'full performance of a new battery is achieved only after 2 or 3 completer charge and discharge cycles. How do I discharge?. I am a complete novice and a mac user and feel I must be pretty stupid not to be able to get it to work! Please help. Thanks

It sounds like maybe your battery has been disabled...that would be the easiest fix. : )

Open Start menu, right-click on "My Computer", left-click "Manage". Within the resulting menu, select "Device Manager" from the menu on the left side. Right-click on the "Batteries" device, and select "Properties". Check to see that the device(battery) is set to "Enabled" at the bottom of the window.

Also, make sure that it is installed properly physically...I have done such silly things before. Hope it is one of these two simple fixes.

    It's still under warranty???

Thanks for reply - unfortunately I cannot find the start menu. On the home screen I just have the pictures of the 4 boxes with connect, work, fun (not at the moment) and files?

Although in the quick guide it refers to Notebook PC on the system information it says operating system is Linpus Linux Lite? could you please help again!

Jeremy's Dad . . . . Well, I checked out your first easy fix. I've a similar problem, altho I've got Windows XP on board. I played with it for a a month or so until November, then it sat for two months. It was operating seemingly OK until then. Likely the battery pooped out. I don't think I drained it before letting it sit, nor am I likely to have left it running as it ran out and then sat lonely for 2 months. I tried to boot it up and failed. I charged it overnight and it failed. It started on AC adapter, but when I unplugged it crashed; screen black, all lights out. I've been trying to find info online and you folks are the first I've seen getting close.

I've followed your detail above, even going so far as to uncheck, reboot, check, reboot with no change in status. Again, unplugging AC caused catastrophic failure. I've charged the bat overnight once again.

I've lived with battery-driven laptops and pda's for a good number of years and never had a battery functioning failure like this before, even if it sat for months'n months'n months. I've lost data <hmmm, not sure that's true, now that I contemplate it> :? Ummmm, I pray your second easy fix works. Linda

EDITED TO STATE: BTW, the battery shows -0- power after overnight charging <ugh>. How on earth did this die off? It's less than 6 mos. old and in my possession after Office Depot purchase. Is it recoverable?

i had my aao in november and i set it up then it was packed away till xmas morning. It too was then totally flat and would only run on AC power. The battery would not charge either. I eventually got the battery to charge when the laptop was off and it has been fine since. It took about 3 hours to charge but has been fine since.

OK, James, I'll put it on power without being powered-up to be certain I've given it an adequate chance. It seems to me I did that earlier in the week, but doing so today will insure the attempt and +/- potential. Thanks for sharing your experience.

If you posted in the "Linux" forum, instead of the "Windows" forum, you would get more precise help. ;) All I know is Windows...if the other replies above don't fix you up, then I am clueless...

OK, James, done! On power, off on <huh?> 4+ hours and it remains at zero. Geeeeez, I'll have to round up my receipt and see if it's still covered by warranty. It would appear that my problem is my battry <chuckling>. I certainly hope that a $350 piece of e-quipment doesn't require a new battery every 3-4 months, at $50+ each. I've had PDAs hold battery charges for 4-6 months without charging or use. Major bummer!

My apologies for confusing this thread without having checked out the charge status, even though I'd charged it. I actually DO know better.

My best for a gr8 New Year, folks.

one thing i remember was that when it was not charging the orange charge light was flashing every few seconds after a few minutes of plugging it in. It did not appear to be charging when it was flashing. so i had to cycle this quite a few times as i was guessing it was only charging for the 1st few minutes. after a hour of doing this in then stopped flashing and was continuing to charge all the time. then 3 hours later when green and has been good since. these batteries appear to f**k up if left to completely discharge which is a bit of a pain. hope this helps

Hmmm, James, yes, it does help. It reduces my sense of hopelessness. So, what did it look like when it was charging? Orange on constantly? Because you're right, it is flashing continually. And you checked the charging status how? Going in and looking at the %% charge status every 15-or-so minutes? What a pain! A pain I can live with, BTW, if it restores this bat to operational status.

I knew ever so much more about mainframe computer testing and maintenance in the mid-80's than I do our current product lines. My product line used both an IBM mainframe with a Tandem mainframe backup, making testing a bit complex. What I knew to do was to give the problem to the technical specialists and leave the problem with them, thankfully, while I dealt with the end-users <chuckling>. This kind of try-and-fail, try-and-fail is a pain in the neck, isn't it? There seems to be no escape from technical problem-solving in today's end user environment.

You are so kind to be checking back on this. Thanks a bunch! I'll follow-up with you.

OMG!! It's not flashing anymore! WAHOO!!! I'll check the %% charged status in a bit to see if anything good is happening.

yes flashing orange which i took to mean that it was not charging. when charging properly now it is on constantly. it would not overcome this whilst running. but when switched off the 1st 2 mins or so it stayed constant before flashing. i took this as meaning that battery was so low that the charger was not working properly however after repeating this process i think that a small bit of charge got in and eventually the light then stayed constant and it then charged as normal. not very scientific i know but it worked and the logic seems to fit lol !!

Oh, S**T!!! It started flashing again. So I'll unplug and replug and unplug and replug, yadda yadda yadda, until it starts moving up the road.

    Sure hope I'm on the right track here . . . .

[edited to add] So, OK, it's not flashing at the moment. Very weird, James! Just weird!

Nope . . . not one hour, James . . . three! The light is green; the battery at 100% capacity! YAAAAAAY !!!

It doesn't get any better than my experience in this user forum . . . no better.

    Thanks so much,
    Linda
