newbie pls help..icon appeared, lost network...

    hi guys, i hope some kind and clever person can help me......i bought an acer one for my daughter............all of a sudden an icon appeared on the left....when i move cursor over it it says new....not yet configured..... :(
    its made my network stop working and the toolbar has fell off the bottom of the page....
    i have spent days trying to fix it but i am not too sure what to do.
    i have tried to make a recovery disc...........my lap top did not like it and hasnt been the same since.........
    i have tried looking on this forum but after several hours i am going cross eyed...
    pls help..... :)
