hi, i have just got my new A1 xp version. I am connected to the web through my wirless router which is also connected to my desktop pc. on my last laptop i just clicked add network place and i was able to connect and view the filesand print on my home desktop pc (file and printing permissions are in place) the problem is that the A1 does not seem able to find the desktop pc. if i try to install the ms client protocol it asks for the driver and dispite putting the xp cd on a usb drive it will still not find it? anyone had this problem and reolved it?? incidentally what a great little machine. thanks james

Sometimes a little friendliness goes a long way. We do not always have to be so negative. A simple "Please try not to post topics twice" would have sufficed in my opinion.

I would think it would of been apparent to people reading them that the 1st was posted in desperation on the beginners section and then after whilst i was awaiting a reply i came across a more suitable location.not really rocket science but then again you already knew that you question was merely making a point, a verbal wrist slap. Forums are full of self appointed guardians who jump down peoples throats for no real reason, for goodness sake man (or women) give yourself a break!

Don't mind melhiore's attidude. It's called competent-veteran-loses-patience-with-noobie-itis; I suffer from it sometimes too, and I'm only semi-competent.

    ;)

Try to look at this from other side. He is asking the same simple question twice. Next person after him will do the same - why not, next newbie will do exactly the same... After about one week another newbie willing to use SEARCH will find difficult or even impossible to go through all topics with the same question... In that case he will ask the same question again - as a result what we've got?? I would call this mess...

I understand his frustration but such attitudes can easily give a forum a bad reputation especially for new members.

If people are not interested in helping the new on a site, then why bother visiting a forum site, since that is what the forum is here for.

I am not bashing him on here as I know he has much valuable information to contribute, but I think we should all take a moment to think about how we may be perceived before we post. A little kindness goes a long way and you can get he same point across in a nice way.

I am in the IT field and assist users that have limited knowledge of computers everyday and I have to remember this when assisting them. I have heard the silliest questions and problems and I have to treat each one of them as a serious issue to avoid alienating the person. I usually will be much more respected for the knowledge that you have when you do not make people feel stupid.

These are my thoughts on the issue and I will leave this issue with these comments and hope that they make an impact.

I entirely see your point. I get frustrated everyday but have to put it aside and address the issue as though it was a serious and legitimate concern.

My point being from reading many of your posts is you do have a great deal of knowledge to offer on here and I would hate for people to disregard your posts because of the perceived negativity that they have read from your past posts. :)

It is exchanges like this, mainly the negative attitude I should say, that cause newbies to just NEVER post and eventually leave and find another place that is much friendlier. Sure, searching would be better than asking the same question and getting the same reply that many, many others already have. But those who are NOT newbies really need to get down off their high horse once in a blue moon and look at it from another point of view and TRY TO BE NICE. I know that for some this is difficult if not impossible to do but a little bit of sugar can go a LONG way. And newbies quite often become experts and it's great for a forum to have as many of those as possible stick around ... so that they can BE NICE and help out the next newbie that comes along! HOPEFULLY the idea behind a Beginner's Section is so beginners will speak up without fear of being belittled.

Beyond all that, don't take yourself or any forum so darn seriously. Sheesh!

You're right, we have a mess. And there's no easy way to clean it up. It's pretty obvious that a lot of people either don't use SEARCH at all, or are not using it effectively. How many times has someone asked about installing 2GB of ram in their AA1? How many times have people asked about dual-booting Ubuntu with either XP or Linpus? I know from my experience that many times have people have claimed that they need an SD card in the slot when they boot some Linux other than Linpus in order for the slot (doesn't matter if it's left or right) to recognize a card; however in my experience with Fedora and Ubuntu, this is not true. We need a well-indexed set of FAQs along with answers. Then we could just reply RTFF

Hey guys I sincerely apologise that I caused this thread. My friends regard me as an expert but I secretly come to people like you for help!!! I searched the site for several days but could not find a result and now have several other questions but am going to do a good search 1st lol !!!! anyway seriously my wife told me the AA1 is my Xmas present so has hidden it away! I really loved it for a while and got it set up pretty good to my liking. I got no problems from this point onwards with any of you as you all want to help at the end of the day
