The specification from this website says Acer Aspire One has a Mobile Intel 945GSE Express chipset. Mine has Mobile Intel 945GME chipset. I went to Intel.com website and compared the two chipsets together and I found out that the GSE version came out in Q2 of 2008 and GME version came out in Q1 of 2006. Omg!!! I've been had! :? Anyone with GME version?? Go to Settings and it should say there what you have.

you probably installed the wrong driver or something, because old chipset don't support Atom.
Intel 945GSE is the only new chipset to support Atom.......

I'm a newbie and I just got the laptop 2 weeks ago. I never installed anything except for the Live Update that prompted me to install updates for the Acer.

Im afraid mine is the GME chipset also
Ive installed some software and done some live updates but I dont really see how the chipset report would change with a S/W update
    Cheers
PS Mine is the Linux (110) model - Id be interested to hear if its different for a Win system

If you had the GME chipset, that means you can install up to 4GB of RAM!! That would be a yay to me...

    Certainly from the Intel Site
    http://www.intel.com/products/processor/atom/

    > Related products : Chipsets
    > Netbooks - Mobile Intel® 945GSE Express Chipset
    > Nettops - Intel® 945GC Express Chipset

But does this imply that it cant run the GME ?

Why does the "Settings > System Information > Multimedia" screen give:
    > Inter945GME Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

I would rather like to know because that may allow 2GB Ram to be added into the spare slot and I could certainly dispense with any swap partition and maybe somehow map /tmp into RAM.

    Please, judeh101, dont just say:
"GME is not possible to run Atom. just to tell you guys."
when the system indicats that it IS. - at least provide a reference

    Cheers

Guys, I would'nt rely so much on the hw identification provided by the sistem settings.

Both CPU-Z and GPU-Z report i945GME chipset, and we know at least CPU-Z supports the Atom platform, so misreport is unlikely.

it might be both bug with the programs, you'd never know. GME and GSE are physically different chips, GME has a die on the chip, and GSE has a plastic black cap on the northbridge plus it is smaller.
And plus installing the wrong working driver may have this problem too.

Installing a 2GB RAM module DOESN'T work. All those who tried have reported failure. That's a dead end, mate, sorry.

You can do this with a 1gb stick.

There are also threads that discuss, claiming back the space used by the swap partition.

Yep, thanks guys Ive now found those threads.

I must admit that a 2Gig stick doesn't really bother me that much any more.
I do go into swap but not by much so a total of 1.5Gb RAM would cover my needs and I could say ta-ta to Swap
    - regaining 1G of SSD and avoiding its overuse (?).

Although the point is now moot for me, I suppose Ill find which chipset it is when the RAM goes in.

    Cheers

Take a look at some of the teardown or ram upgrade images, there are loads - google.

I am sure you can view mobo details from the images.
