Does someone know how to open the power adapter?
Background is I checked the weight of the system:
904g Aspire with HDD (without Akku)
    165g Battery (2.2AH)
162g Power Adpater with cable to netbook
    182g Power cord !

At least my system comes with a 3 wire powercord with is aweful heavy. I would like to change this to a 2 wire cord (as it used for e-shavers. Someone any idea?

This may well work for a while but the earth is there for a good reason. Wouldn't it be more sensible just to buy a more lightweight mains cable that is shorter?

What can possibly go wrong by changing the lenght of the cord or making a cord with a smaller wire-section. At 30W the current is below 200mA (240V), so one does not need a lager wire-section.

Do you mean the pics from franco_bez ? This could be a solution. Although if I look at this, I think I have to cut the connector into 2 pieces - so that they will better slide in. The holes in the 2 connector cord are more closer to each other than the mikey mouse connector.

Famous last words (shortly followed by a large blue flash and a sort of "aaaaarghhh" noise).

I go to uni and I hate carrying long cables so I modified some :)

here are some examples or shorter cables I have

RJ45 cable for a network if I need to and a X-over converter to connect to Xbox
USB extention cable with converter for USB converter so I don't damage the USB stick and with a converter block to convert it into a mini usb so I can use it on a mobile hard drive
Shorter USB Cable to use mobile internet with Skype 3 S2 mobile phone
Sony Ericsson Data Cable shortened for my P990i
and Shorter Power cord as the original is too long. also with a Unique Yellow plug. so I know which plug is mine (uni plugs are all black and look the same as the original AAO one)

There is a magnet on some of the cables to stop power surge and to Hide the soldering of the wires

What about using one of these ?
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/US-Plug-for-Apple ... 240%3A1318

You can get them for any country.
Ebay search "Apple ipod power plug"

The powersupply does not need an earth as it is plastic and fully enclosed.

OK that was meant to be funny but...

I have been messing with electricity for 30 years and one of the things I have learnt in that time is that the earth is there for a reason. One of the pictures above showed a two core cable plugged into the Aspire One PSU, which is supposed to be earthed. "What could possibly go wrong?" - electrocution, that's what.

Using a shorter cable is clearly not dangerous, but using two core wire rather than three core is not a good idea.

Acer should have made the fat cable shorter and the thin one longer...

You are absolutely right. The adapter is light and could have been made into the mobile phone style adapter that plugs directly into the wall with no mains cable at all. It is ridiculous that the mains cable on its own weighs almost a fifth of the weight of the computer itself.

Perhaps someone will make an aftermarket adapter that is more lightweight.

    Like that?

I got an IGO power adapter. It plugs in directly to the wall or can be used with a cord. It has a retractable cord with an end that fits the Acer One. With it's ability to charge my phone and any other device from one charging brick, it's the perfect travel piece. Works from an airline seat, 110v wall plug, or cig ligther.

Yes, exactly like that. Well spotted.

I got my calculator out and that is 195g which is only very slightly more than the weight of the mains lead. Thanks for the link.

I hate the idea to spend 20 or 30€ for something I have already payed for and even 5 would be to much.
What makes you sure that the earth is necessary? Maybe you are right with "argggg" but I would like to understand.
Most of this power adapters doesn't have this.

Most of the weight is probably not the long cable, but the plug itself. At least for our european version.
