    Hi

Just wondered if anyone had any experience with connecting their old dvd writer with the above cable. Don't have a external writer and wondered if the above cable would do the trick? Main reason I'm asking is it says that linux isn't supported. I have the acer aspire 120 gig with linux on.

    Cheers.

    Hi davidc.
I have just the same Q about why Maplin say it won't work with Linux - surely it is just a h/w device?
But maybe you should post this in the Linux forum?

Are you saying it works with Linux?

I don't think it is as easy as that - there are several issues here...

I know this is a windows forum, but the question was posed by a linux user and this is the only place the device is discussed

As mentioned elsewhere, booting should be possible from such a device, but the problems come with the o/s and the actual format of the drive.

When Maplin state that it will not work with Linux, are they saying:
    1. it will not boot?
    2. If the disk is Linux format it will not be readable by any o/s?
    3. That if it is NTFS (or whatever) it will not be readable by Linux?

We need hard facts from someone who has actually used it in these situations!

I never used this under linpus, but it works with ubuntu. It uses the generic cd/dvd driver so driver support is not an issue. I installed windows xp and ubuntu with the one I linked so I can correctly assume it can boot from it.

I have one of these and can confirm that it works perfectly with Windows, Linux including linpus and Mac OS X.

It is recognised by the bios as a bootable device, I used it to install XP.
