I'm a total Linux rookie - I've had this brilliant little One for two weeks and realise I know NOTHING about Linux!

I've read about the advanced mode for this Linpus Lite, but I can't make the instructions on this forum work. I don't know what the 'terminal' is or how to use it!

Can anyone give me some step by step instructions?

Many thanks in advance from a grateful novice.

    Press Alt+f2

    Type Xterm

Type the command (xfce-setting-show off the top of my head, but it's in the sticky at the top of this sub-forum)

Then just follow what the sticky says.

That's my problem - I've tried the instructions at the top of this page and I can't get it to work.

What do I do when I've typed the command into the terminal window? I said I was a real rookie!

    Hit return.
Then right click on the desktop to get the menu.

Thanks for your help - it works! It's amazing - I now feel I can really get to grips with this great machine.

Mine says "command not found" when hitting ENTER after entering "xface-setting-show" into the terminal.

Just a hint in case it doesn't seem to work for you, try hitting alt+f2 and just type "xfce-setting-show" (- quotes) into the "Run Program" text field. That circumvents the whole terminal.

I had the same problem. I wasn't even sure where to type in the command. There was a command already in the terminal window and I kept trying to type over it, but couldn't, than opened up a new terminal tab, then a new terminal window and typed it there with no effect. I finally figured out to type the command after the existing command. Then I got stuck because no one said I should "Hit Enter" after typing in the command. When I finally figured it out, a new window opened up with icons. The first icon was DESKTOP. Left click on the Desktop icon. Another window will open up with two tabs at the top. One says Behavior. Click on that tab, look down the list of options and you'll see the one that says "Show Desktop menu on right click". Check that circle. Now close everything, go back to your desktop, and right click anywhere on the screen. The menu will pop up.

I think the advance users forget that when we new users say "we need detailed instructions", we mean detailed, like exactly where to type in a command and then "hit Enter". I think it would cut down on posts for the same problem if instructions like "hit Enter" were included. It literally took me a couple of hours to finally do what should only have taken a minute or so.

Can you do live updates with advanced mode activated? and if not how do you switch back to normal mode?

    THanks.

Yes. Just don't use the "Software Updater"function found under the system menu - it assumes you work with a normal fedora 8 linux distro instead of a customised Acer Linpus Lite.

You mean don't use the updater in the preferences tab? So where do I go to update then?

No, I mean don't use the thing called ""Software Updater". Limit yourself to "Live Update".

I am a complete rookie. Which means you have to tell me to hit enter; I won't assume it otherwise. :)

    I did this:
    Alt+F2
    typed in xfce-setting-show
    hit Run
looked around at the Xfce Settings Manager.

So far so good. When I right-click anywhere, I get a cool drop-down list of options.

Is there anyway to get rid of the default Linpus boxes?
