Does this netbook lag in video playback? such as hd video 720p/1080p. I was using the wmv hd videos from microsoft, tested it in costco, did lag, but i was wondering, is it true that it lags or is it just the software i was using making it lag? or maybe the settings are not right?

Short answer: Yes it lags, as most netbooks do with HD video.

Long answer: 720p (probably not 1080p, though) can be done with different software with varying success (also true of most netbooks). Good info here if you look around the different posts, or google about almost any netbook and HD playback.

Both 720p and 1080p h.264 works flawlessly with no lag, stutter or dropped frames if you use the following combination of software:

    * Cyberlink 8 h264 codec installed. (Purchase not necessary.)
    * Latest (7.14.10.1005 for W7, don't know for XP) GMA500 driver from intel. Downloadable here: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Product ... 1&lang=eng
    * MPC-HC, with the cyberlink-codec set to "preferred" under "External Filters"
    * Windows 7. I guess XP and Vista works too, but have not tried it. Can someone else test it and report?

This enables hardware-decoding in the GMA500-chip, which will playback 720p with approximately 15-20% cpu utilization. Any other approaches will work badly, and only with a lot of tweaking and overclocking.

Update: According to this guy: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/sho ... ost3852561 hardware decoding does NOT work in XP, only Vista and W7.

Update2: The post is wrong. Hardware decoding works just fine in XP too, using the same Cyberlink8 codec, and MPC-HC.

HD playback works in all Windows OS, all you need i an alternative Mediaplayer like MPC or KMplayer that allows you to use external codecs. You need a codec that makes use of the Hardware acceleration Features of your GMA 500 chip, like Cyberlink PowerDVD 8. There is no need to buy this software, just install the trail version and run it once until you are asked for a product-key. Then abort and you will find the codecs needed in your alternative video player.

There is a very nice "How-to" for XP which also works for Vista or Windows 7, this guide is for a Sony Vaio P but since it uses the same hardware (Z-Atom, GMA 500) --> http://forum.pocketables.net/showthread.php?t=2148

Another guide explained how to get VC1 or VMW-HD content hardware accelerated with the help of some special intel-codecs, but this didn´t work for me (Windows 7) so far. --> http://forum.pocketables.net/showthread.php?t=2531

If anyone managed to get this done on Vista/Win7 please explain it, i´d be even more happier with my Acer 751 ;)

    Greetings,
    Felix

You can use coreAVC which works with WMP11.

All you need to do is install this: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Codec.htm
This is a very lightweight and often updated pack,- rather good.

WMP11 now plays 720p and 1080p .mkv's etc just fine.

Flashplayer video is unfortunately still problematic until Intel releases a driver that works with the hardware acceleration method used in flashplayer. There are lots of new machines coming out soon that will use the GMA500,- so it's quite likely that development of the drivers will increase quite a bit in not too long.

This is strange! As far as i know CoreAVC has NO hardware acceleration (DXVA), indeed it is the fastest software decoder. But we want to get use of your GMA500´s features, or?
The only Codecs triggering DXVA power are: Cyberlink Power DVD 8+, Media Player HC (free) or the Intel Codes (free).

weird... tried those drivers and my score in gaming graphics went down from 2.5 to 1.0 ... im using w7's default driver (version 7.14.10.1092, date 11/20/2008 .. which seems weird since 1005's were 11/6/2009)

I _think_ I remember having a 2.8 gaming graphics score with those drivers. DEFINITELY not 1.0. I'm now back on XP, so I can't check again.

    Thats win7 7260

Latest intel drivers have driverdate may 2009, they end in 1005. (Intel versioning numbers sometimes go downwards instead of upwards, allways look at date).

Same here, on Windows 7 7100, latest drivers (...1005) and SetFSB to 145.

    2,0
    4,3
    2,9
    2,5
    5,4

But video playback has not much to do with the graphic-drivers. More importent is a codec that makes use of the GMA500´s hardware decoding (DXVA).

I strongly recommend you to try this littel tool:
    http://bluesky23.hp.infoseek.co.jp/dxva ... .0.1.2.zip

It shows you the Hardware capebilties of your GPU, and below that a list of installed Codecs which can be used for DXVA playback. Take a look here:
    http://img229.imageshack.us/img229/3108/gma500avc1.jpg

Further you should click "Check DirectShow Decoders..." and search for a video file you like to view. In the screenshot i used this: http://www.divx.com/en/downloads/divx-7-showcase rather heavy stuff ;) (1080p H.264, AAC 5.1 Surround, AAC Stereo, 507MB)

With the free codec that comes from "Media Player Classic - HC" there is no problem playing your H.264 Videos.

    Greetings,
    Felix

Very interesting! How did you install the new driver, maybe i should download it again? If my Aero Rating (2.9) goes up to yours (4.6) i´m sure i can use Aero.

Can anyone tell me the exact settings to get smooth x264 720p mkv videos in media player classic with powerdvd codecs? I can get it running perfectly in powerdvd9, but it runs like crap in mpc, and powerdvd is a crap bloated app, so i dont want to use it permanently!
