First of all - unwanted pop-ups are result of having adware/spyware installed in the system. It can also be result of OS infected by Trojan Horse. Try to download and install SpyBOT Search&Destroy. If you use windows try Malicious Software Removal Tool - it's rather good tool. You can also try to install some form of Internet Security Suite like Kaspersky etc - this will definitely bloat OS but is worth trying...

Agreed. You definately have some form of Spyware/Malware installed. Another good program to get a hold of is "HiJack This!". It's widely available on the net and a Google search will get you there.

Keeping in mind that recovering from spyware / malware is no easy process, especially once the infection has REALLY set in.

A great, tiny little program called "GMER" is an invaluable tool when it comes to removing infections. It's small, runs in safe mode and although it's primarily aimed at rootkits, it detects a huge range of bugs. It's got a high success rate as it is fully functional in safe mode, enables you to delete locked (in use) files, system services etc. It's an advanced program and using it CAN brick your windows installation. But if you want to give it a try you can find it here: http://www.gmer.com If you download it and see a small file with a name made up of random letters and characters, don't be too alarmed. This program has become so well known to hackers, coders, virus programmers etc that they started preventing the program GMER.EXE from launching, so the random letter/number filename works around this.

hi all have tried downloading spybot, doing windows live scan, and hijack this all without success, keeps saying unable to connect to server address?????
Like I said I am not technical so was wondering if a destructive recovery would be the best option???
Thanks for the advice so far.
    regards sandra

Sounds like your HOSTS file could have been hijacked. Although this would normally have been detected. If you want to check it out, use Notepad to open the file c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts Note the filename is actually "HOSTS." there is no extension.

The only line in this file that is 100% necessary is as follows:

    127.0.0.1 localhost

Anything else is being used to redirect u from the website you want, to the address the bug wants you to go.

hi swarvey, managed to download malwarebytes anti malware which removed 7 items, have checked in notepad and only 2 files now exist in host file, all seems to be well at the moment, will let it run for a couple of days and let you know wot happens. Many thanks to you and otheres for your help.

You could download the install files on another machine and save to a usb stick? Install from there?

Keeping a clean hosts file will only help protect you from being sent to false sites. The best bet is to get a decent internet security system if you can.

Also, you have to make sure you shut off System Restore. WindowsXP, Windows7 and Vista backs up registry and system files when you shut down. What does that mean? That means that those nasy worms, virus, etc. just bury themselves into your Restore file. You clean up everything and reboot and the problem is back again. So, make sure you shut off the System Restore feature until everything is running ok. After that - you can safely turn it back on.
