Try hooking up the usb dvd drive to another computer, with the xp disc in and see if they too have trouble booting from the dvd drive.
Can you confirm the dvd drive works?

I have a XP disk that won't boot (on my desktop PC) via the onboard CD drive. I always have to load the 6 XP Boot Floppies (remember those ;) ) and then it boots fine.
Maybe you have to hook up an external floppy drive to the AAO and try it???

    Hi AcerAlec,

I had the same problem with my LG external USB drive.
You should see that when you hit the F12 key to access the boot menu that the external USB dvd drive is not appearing as an option in the boot menu.

In the end I got round the problem by using one of those USB 2.0 to IDE cables.

I hooked up an old internal IDE DVD/CD-ROM drive. Made sure I set the jumper on it to Master. And put the power lead into the back of the DVD/CD Rom drive.
Connected the usb cable to my Acer Aspire One and turned it on and hit the F12 boot menu key to select to boot from the USB CD ROM.

    And it worked.

You can get them for around £10.00p or so if you look around.

I'm in the process of installing XP right now.

So good luck in getting XP installed on your Acer.
