I just purchased the Aspire One with Linpus. After downloading all updates the Huawei Mobile Partner was installed. However, when connecting the Huawei USB modem EC226 and entering the details in Mobile Partner the connection fails with the following error: "The SIM card cannot be detected or is invalid"
In Namibia only the Huawei EC226 is distributed by Telecom. I suspect that there are no Linux drivers for the modem installed. How can I make this modem work? You suggestions are much appreciated. It works perfectly well under Windows.
    Klaus

    Re: Huawei EC226 USB Modem

I think the trick is to open the terminal first, you get this little menu with alt-f2, tick the 'run in terminal' checkbox and then click the 'run' button. Terminal opens and will stay open until you close the window ( or give the command 'exit' ).

Once you are able to give commands you can also look at the last lines of the output of the command

    dmesg

after plugging in your modem. This might give some clues.

    Re: Huawei EC226 USB Modem

Most of it is greek to me too. But near the end you see:

So that looks very healthy! It means that the modem is recognised by the system and that the proper module ('driver') is loaded.
The module creates the 'device nodes' /dev/ttyUSB0 .. 2 so that higher level software can communicate with the modem.

Unfortunately my knowledge is limited to the lower level. Also I don't own an Aspire One, ( I just had to make one working for a neighbour in the past ) so I cannot test anything.

Apart from trying again with Mobile Partner I suggest you try to use 'wvdial' ( it is installed ).

    Re: Huawei EC226 USB Modem

    Hi Jasper,
Thanks for your speedy reply. I did try wvdial and received the followig response:
    [user@localhost home]$ wvdial
--> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.60
--> Cannot open /dev/ttyUSB0: Device or resource busy
--> Cannot open /dev/ttyUSB0: Device or resource busy
--> Cannot open /dev/ttyUSB0: Device or resource busy
    [user@localhost home]$

    Any other suggestions?

    Cheers for now
    Klaus

    Re: Huawei EC226 USB Modem

    That is not greek! :)

I think it means Mobile Partner is still trying to use it.
Can you stop that program ?

Rebooted and had modem connected and still get the same response on wvdial.
Tried with modem attached same story.

    Re: Huawei EC226 USB Modem

    meant to say "disconnected"

I was on the Huawei web site and there it says the EC226 only supports WinXP, Vista and Win2000. Could that be the problem or should the Mobile Partner version for Linpus sort out that problem?

    Re: Huawei EC226 USB Modem

    Please try

    sudo wvdial

    ( explanation: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=198724 )

    If that is better,

    sudo wvdialconf

    could be the next step

Is that not true for all those modems ?

    Re: Huawei EC226 USB Modem

Also it may be necessary to create the directory /var/lock

    sudo mkdir /var/lock

( IIRC In Linpus /var is a filesystem in memory, so it is empty on boot )

    Re: Huawei EC226 USB Modem

I really appreciate all your assistance. I followed your suggestions and the following was the response and still the modem returns the SIM Card error:

    [user@localhost home]$ sudo wvdial

--> Cannot open /dev/ttyUSB0: No such file or directory
--> Cannot open /dev/ttyUSB0: No such file or directory
    [user@localhost home]$ sudo wvdialconf

    Re: Huawei EC226 USB Modem

I am surprised about the change in the name: "ttyUSB_utps_modem".
But I don't think it matters what it is called.
Is it consistent with the last lines of 'dmesg' ?
( please don't post all of it again )

I think you should try to edit /etc/wvdial.conf

    sudo gedit /etc/wvdial.conf

    Re: Huawei EC226 USB Modem

I would try wvdialconf once more.

    My basic understanding is:

---- low level: modem is inserted, recognised, module is loaded, nodes in /dev are created.

---- high level: software like wvdial or mobile partner can now 'talk to the modem', like telling it to dial etc.

In your case the low level seems to be fine, exept that I find this change in name confusing.
To see what you have in /dev :

    ls -l /dev/ttyUSB*

Note that /dev is 'dynamic': it can change.

    Re: Huawei EC226 USB Modem

As you suggested, I ran the 2 commands. I also noticed that the modem is a locked modem meaning it has no SIM card. Could it be that the Mobile Partner program has a problem with that?

    [user@localhost ~]$ sudo wvdialconf
    Editing `/etc/wvdial.conf'.
