how do i add apps to dektop?

    hi i have recently acquired my aa1 and have done most things i wish and have managed to put vlc on my desktop however when it came to putting GIMP on i couldnt do it and i was wondering if someone could do an indepth guide on how to add each individual app please

    EDIT

    also after sum tweaking there are some blank spots on the desktop and i cannot remove them so help here as well please
