I ask only out of curiosity :)

I note that there are grub config files, but there'sno sign of a grub menu on boot, nor does it wait the ten seconds defined as `timeout' in grub.conf.

So does it use grub? Or has Acer decided to speed up the boot by doing it some other way? And if it does use grub, how do you get to the grub menu on boot?

Yes it does. Check /boot/grub directory and you will find the grub.conf file as well. :)

Ah, there are two different grub.confs. Well, well. Thanks, Acer :)

you may have to add setting of colors in the grub.conf.
This thread contains more about how to do that.

Thanks. To be honest, it all made sense when I realized that the grub.conf in /etc was not the one that actually got used. :/

A new way to fix grub bootloader, please read Howto: Change grub background image... in Howto Guides. Sorry, I can't write the exact link right now.
