Whenever I turn on my netbook it automatically searches for wi-fi networks as soon as it boots into windows.

This is great at home to be instantly online, but annoying when I'm out and about. As it takes longer for Windows to become responsive if it's busy trying (and failing) to find a wi-fi network to connect to.

How can I turn automatic wireless network detection on and off so that on boot up it doesn't do this?

    Thanks!

Look for Windows Mobility Center in Control Panel. There you can turn-off wifi and stays off until you reactivate it.

Thanks very much! Win 7 is pretty intuitive, but every now and then I come up against something frustratingly simple that I can't work out the answer to!

Glad to be of help. To make things easier and faster pin a shortcut of Windows Mobile Center to your Desktop or task bar. ;)
