Diable 2 screen res issue

So, I downloaded the D2 shareware demo and when I try and run it, my screen goes blank but the monitor shows a message that the game cannot run in this resolution. I've tried everything, changing my monitors res to 800x600 and to a few lower reses. I tried to run in a virtual window...tried a ton of things..every time I get that message....even when I run the graphics test, same thing..it never gets through that, I just get the same message on my monitor. This is on my desktop computer but I want to try D2 on the Acer but am not sure it wont do that same thing.
