Does anyone have an Acer Aspire One 10.1" net-book?

Tonight I had to do a lot of download of updates and then had to do AV/AS scans. The Acer Aspire One 10.1" net-book got very hot on the bottom. I was trying to find out if the fan was working and I never could feel any air blowing out of the bottom of the net-book where the ventilation slots are. I even put a very thin tissue over that area and it never moved once.
How can I tell that the cooling fan is working on this unit if it is getting so hot?
This is a birthday present for my grandson and I would not want it to catch fire, etc.
