cell battery

I recently purchased a 9 cell battery. When I installed it I did a full charge and then I started it up in safe mode and let it fully recharge as per one of the posts in this forum. When I first start the machine it will show a battery lif of 7 + hours. I will use the computer for a while and when it gets down to about 4+ hours left it will come up with the battery warning about switching to AC power as the battery is about to run out. It will display 22min remaining after it had just shown 4+ hours the minute before. Any assistance or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
