Well just when I thought everything was going well I switched off and when I turned back on it appears my web browser has vanished. The wirless access light is on but the browser did not automatically load and the icon to access the set up screen is not highlighted. I do not believe I have messed up anything by installing vlc ... but who knows. Any advice please.

Bob I'm struggling to understand your problem. Your explanation is not easy to understand.

Can you start firefox? by opening a terminal and typing.
    Code:
    firefox
    Then hitting the enter key.

Or is it the Network Manager applet thats missing from the panel?

Apologies for confusing post - it is the network manager that seems to have vanished. I can double click on the desktop browser icon and nothing happens or if I try to access network center again nothing happens. I assume that somehow I have inadvertently turned off something - how I do not know. Everything else is working fine (I am using my desktop pc to post this reply) so any advice will be most welcome.

What happens? if you open a terminal and type
    Code:
    sudo /etc/rc.d/init.d/NetworkManager start
    Does the NetworkManager applet re-appear?
