You did search the forums before starting a new thread, did you?

Because this thread: viewtopic.php?f=27&t=1727&start=0&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&hilit=avi tells you what to do, and I'm surprised you didn't find it as quickly as I did.

The short answer is Yes, it can play AVI files with Mplayer. I just downloaded a sample avi file, emailed it to myself and opened the email with my AA1. Doubleclicking the avi attachment openend and played it :)

Not entirely true for all formats - most avi's are encoded with e.g. divx. One needs a codec for that, which the AAO does not have by default.
As posted however, the remedy is simple and easily found with a quick forum search ;)

    MAIN SOLUTION
Macles* has put a guide on his page explaining how to install VLC 0.9, including a desktop icon. I would recommend this.
    http://macles.blogspot.com/2008/11/inst ... linux.html

    Older post
Below is the pre-macles* guide ;) Useful if you prefer mplayer.

Solution 1: updating mplayer/installing VLC/SMPLayer from the fedora repositories
If you haven't issued the following command yet (which means you did not bother to read the big README topic - shame on you) do so now:
    Code:
    sudo yum update fedora-release
Add the RPM Fusion repositories (previously Livna):

    Code:
    sudo rpm -ivh [url]http://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/rpmfusion-free-release-stable.noarch.rpm[/url]
    Code:
    sudo rpm -ihv [url]http://download1.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-stable.noarch.rpm[/url]
    Then:
Option A: install the superior VLC
Note that this will install an OLDER version of VLC. If you want the newest, follow the macles* guide referenced above.
    Code:
    sudo yum install vlc
If you wish to use VLC in your browser, also type:
    Code:
    sudo yum install python-vlc mozilla-vlc
In case you only get audio, but no video when playing a movie file, try disabling the compositing feature.

    Option B: update mplayer
    Code:
    sudo yum update mplayer
    sudo yum install mplayer-gui
If you prefer, instead of mplayer-gui you can install the far fancier smplayer:
    Code:
    sudo yum install smplayer
Solution 2: Get ACERS version of VLC with a few extra steps
    Step 1: download vlc.sh.zip from ftp://ftp.acer-euro.com/netbook/aspire_ ... plication/
Step 2 - follow these instructions:
    http://macles.blogspot.com/2008/10/new- ... 7378612439

    Dear Grim Squeaker

I just downloaded the VLC media player from your instructions. I want to thank you so much this player is awesome. I can now watch videos from my Archos portable media player, the vlc player even repaired a broken file that I had on there. Once again many thanks. :D

I had real problems playing .AVI files from torrents (yes, I Know, but you try getting films in English in Bulgaria). Windows Media Player and Real Player couldn't find a codec to play them, but they played first time on VLC. The sound was crackly, as another poster has mentioned, but otherwise they were fine on a large screen TV as an external monitor.

    Hi Grim Squeaker,
I bought an Acer Aspire One a couple of days ago, to replace a 10 year old laptop. Like many new to Linux, I found it's pre-installed media players wouldn't play some of the most popular video formats (DVD's, vobs, flash videos, divx etc). I was contemplating WinXP (what I've been used to), but didn't want to give up the speed of Linux.

So I just wanted to say a big thank-you for your very clear instructions on installing VLC media player. Once I'd found the Terminal window and sorted out how to use it, it was incredibly easy to use following your instructions.

    Cheers,
    Clanduncan.

sry that i have to interrupt all the successes here with my vlc problem. I did not download the vlc player via the links metnioned above but downloaded it from acer's website. they made the installation quite simple. however, the player they distribute seems to be very simple, too.

i could not play ANY .avi files or anything similar. i then tried the links above to install vlc again...however my system then told me that the same version does already exist.

i then tried to delete vlc by looking at the live-update history (as explained by acer)...problem here: internal error occurred and the window closed. it does that from now on as it seems...

can anyone please help me? i simply want to watch some avi files...i would even be happy if anyone could tell me where to get the right codec for vlc and how to install it...

    thanks very much guys!!!

To the previous poster: the list with codecs is very, very, very long.
Can you force an update with sudo yum update vlc ?

If not - these are the dependencies installed when following my instructions:
    Installed: vlc.i386 0:0.8.7-0.4.fc8

    To all:
The contents of the livna repository have been transferred to the RPM Fusion repositories.
Acer Linpus does not seem to be able to handle that; which means that if you add livna to a vanilla installation you will still be unable to install anything...

The solution is of course simple:
    Code:
    sudo rpm -ivh [url]http://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/rpmfusion-free-release-stable.noarch.rpm[/url] [url]http://download1.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-stable.noarch.rpm[/url]
Or use the links on http://rpmfusion.org/Configuration

    to Grim Speaker:

yes I already tried to force it by yum...but it only told me that the version was already installed. it seems the files are some divx codecs that work mainly under windows..but im not sure at all...

about the dependencies and your method...as i dont really know what you mean by the series of dependencies i guess that relates to the method described below...i also tried that but neither that worked.

even if the list of codecs might be very long i would rather try that way...do you know any related bundles of codecs that i can install under linpus?

thanks very much for your help!

Worked for me as well - although I wasn't entirely sure what I was doing (being a Linux newbie). Perhaps someone could do a demo on You Tube?

    Thanks, Grim!

I installed the VLC version from the Acer site, but it seems to have deleted some of the codecs, even after editing out the correct lines in the .sh file...
Now I can't get it off my poor little netbook and using yum to install VLC doesn't work either, says it's installed etc, but when I start it up it remains unable to play divx and xvid cideos, neither sound nor audio. I tried my best to remove the offending copy of vlc, but could use some help here... the new xvid and divx codecs say they conflict with the already installed ones. I'm sick and tired of the whole RPM dependency rigmarole, but I don't want to have to set everything up again after installing ubuntu..

    Please help!!

I have 2 netbooks for the kids Christmas pressies.

I installed vlc player on one from instructions found elsewhere, but the sound was crackling. I found this thread and using option B was able to update mplayer and it plyed the avi files no problem then. I successfully uninstalled vlc player and everything was great.

On the second machine, it's not working. Is there anything I should do before entering:
    sudo yum update mplayer
    sudo yum install mplayer-gui

I've tried following exactly what I did last time, but it didn't work.
