BIOS update

Last year, my Acer netbook wouldn't boot and because it was still under warranty, I returned it to John Lewis who sent it back to their workshop where I was told it needed a BIOS update. They returned it abd it has been fine since. What I want to know (as a non-techie) is whether this scenario will occur again, as it is now out of warranty. I have had two other computers for years and neither has ever needed a BIOS update. Your help and advice would be appreciated. :)
