Bad Adapter Charger

I bought an adapter, charger for my Lenovo Thinkpad. It is a generic charger. It was fine for the first few weeks, but then couldn't give the laptop enough power to pick up the router or wireless signal. In order to use this laptop I have to be plugged right into the modem. This is an issue for me. The Lenovo needs a new battery, would that help the system get enough power to recognize the router or do I need to get another charger too?
