The machine turns on just fine, loads windows just fine, the mouse works just fine, but the moment I touch ANY key, the screen goes black.
Sad thing is, we bought this item about 3 years or so ago and have used it infrequently.....probably averaging once a month at the most.
Any solutions? If not, I'm going to toss the piece of crap in the garbage with the rest of the garbage.

Have you tried a USB keyboard? Which version of Windows are you running?

Yes. A USB connected keyboard does work. So the solution is to carry a keyboard along with the aspire?

Hi SimonTemplar aka "The Saint", :D

Before throwing it out you should try disconnecting the keyboard and cleaning the pins of the connector ribbon (lightly with a red eraser) and reconnecting the keyboard. Following is a link to a video of the AAO being taken apart. In the video Tnkgirl has problems with removing the keyboard but when I did it I had no problems so take heart it is not that hard and if you mess up then you are no worse off than now since you are ready to trash the AAO.

It is nice that someone still remembers my movie career.
I'll give this a try and let you know how things turn out.
    A red eraser. Hmmmmmmm.
