Well basically I got my 80GB Toshiba ZIF drive yesterday, and CF to ZIF adapter today, with no flip cable with the CF only 2 standard ones, but one was made for a thin slot, and one for a normal slot.
Anyways, my bios won't detect the drive.
If i keep my One open and turn it on, it spins up, so surely it's connected correctly.
This is how it's connected, if I put the drive on a table with the sticker side up, then I slot the thin end of the cable into the slot with pins down.
Is that how everyone else does it?
Or am I totally off track and I need a flip cable?
I have also used UBCD to try and erase it, and on a 3 pass, it got to 70% total completed and failed.
And only 2 out of the disk erase tools could find it, 3 weren't able to detect it.
XP installer says it's not able to install to it.

its connected but not properly connected. i believe the toshiba needs a thin zif connector, and you need to put a very slight force inserting it (even if its a zero insertion force). on minw i make sure i have an extra zif cable just incase.
make sure the cable connecting to the mb is not loose or it wont detect your hdd

    just my 2 cents

Yep, I've got a thin connector, I have 2 leads,4 connectors in total, and there is only one which slots in properly.
I just took it out, and tried pushing it a bit more in, but it won't go.
I can pull it out even if it's locked, but with a small force, not tugging it, but gently pulling it can come out.
But it WILL NOT go in any further. so I'm guessing it is as locked as it will get.
And it is connected to the motherboard properly.

Rory, it seems like the Hitachi drives *require* a Flipside FFC Cable.

If you check out my post below, you'll see that you can bend the cable you have, and it should work just as well.

Thanks again, but I've got a Toshiba, I'm happy that someone has confirmed you need flip for Hitachi and normal for Toshiba

i saw something about a 'filter' for the cable in a post here, but don't know where that post is now :(

I can't wait until you've got it sorted

There is a black thing that came with the original ssd...

Take it out from the ssd and pass your zif cable trough it like it is on the original ssd...

What does the filter do? just seems like a random block of metal to me.
I am going to try it all again today, and if I have no luck then I'll have to send it back. I have already got the go-ahead from the seller to post it, but seeing as I have until 5.30 tonight to post it, I may as well try and get it working again...

    Hi

I am preparing to replace the SSD with a 1.8" Toshiba HDD myself.

I have not got the HDD yet, but since you have got the 80 GB drive I take it that the AA1 can accommodate a 8 mm thick drive :?:

How much space is there between the motherboard and casing - the drive pictured in an other post appeared to be secured by double sided "tape" so some space should be set aside for that also.

    Yeah it fits easily...
But you have to take the hole motherboard out, and remove a few screw holes.

Update, with a Vista disc, it gets to the drive bit like xp, says 74.5GB unallocated space , you clock new, then it says cant creat partition.
Then it gives error 0x80042453 and when you click ok, and go back to the drive selection screen it says make sure the drive's controller is enabled in BIOS.
Now, trying Dariks Boot and Nuke one last time, and the drive is clicking, so its obviously a bad drive.
Thanks for all the suggestions guys
