Right, after a few days of fiddling with my new Acer Aspire One, I have sorted out most issues. One more question has arisen though.

I have enabled advanced mode, and the right-click menu is available. If I use right-click/system/software updater it suggests a number of updates I should apply. This is not Live Update, but the advanced mode updater.

So, keeping in mind that the Aspire One has a rather idiosyncratic OS, should I download all the updates or steer clear of this feature?

Ta for all your help chums :)~

    Steer clear.

The software updater is not safe on this machine - it doesn't know about the changes Acer have made and will break things badly!

I guessed this may be an issue. Good job I thought about it, it seems. Message received and understood...
