I bought the Acer Aspire One last month. Now I am not sure that it has 3G support. How to know it ? Is there any software of manufacture to check ?

There is no 3G support at the moment in any AA1 as there is couple of component missing from mainboard. Probably Acer will sell another model with 3G modem build in. There is only a driver already prepared in available software. But it is useless w/o hardware...

There is a lot of different ways to install external 3G units. All the information is already in couple of threads. Most popular is Huawei products family. Use SEARCH please - forum will give you all answers...

Hmmm, what's your problem then?? May be installation under Linux is not that simple but there is couple of threads already explaining how to do that...

I think it's a massive own goal by Acer to tout the Aspire 1 as truly mobile, but then sell it with an empty (and not upgradeable) 3G SIM slot, and also without their OS having any decent and straightforward support for external USB 3G modules.

Indeed, many people (such as myself) are pretty much forced to format and install XP.... it's pretty poor stuff..

All 3G modems made by Option seem to work in Linux, the Option iCON 225 is specifically mentioned.

I would also point the finger of blame at the mobile companies (with exception of Vodafone) who don't produce Linux drivers for their 3G Modems, forcing newbs like me to try 'hacks' to get things working without success.. very frustrating. Maybe once there are more Netbooks with OEM Linux software in the marketplace will there be progress, but I'm not holdng my breath!

yeah, I spent a couple of days trying to get my card to work with no success. It's just too much work for someone new to linux or moving outside of the windows environment.
