XFCE desktop - now can't access settings

    Hello, a friend set up a normal xfce desktop for me, i get the full menu up when I right click and can view the menu containing all the settings options but when I select one the menu disappears and nothing further happens, any help gratefully received. (I have heard a brief mention of reinstalling something from the repsitories?)
