    Hi Everyone,

    I've had my Acer Aspire One netbook since March of 2011.

    It's only since around August that I've had serious performance issues with it, to the point where I avoid using it at times.

    Hopefully someone can give some advice.

    My Acer
    ======

    Aspire One D255E
    Intel Atom 1.66 GHz
    512 KB cache
    1 GB DDR3 Memory
    250 GB HDD

    Issues
    ======

    - programs and system frequently crash
    - programs frequently lag to the point of forcing a reboot
    - when first going to a web site after 'waking' computer it takes a long time to start (in chrome and firefox)
    - volume is consistently low, even when turned up all the way

    I Use
    =====

    - chrome or firefox instead of IE
    - foxit instead of adobe reader
    - open office instead of MSOffice

    Things I've Tried
    =================

    - disk clean-up
    - disk defrag
    - spybot
    - adaware
    - avast anti-virus
    - CCleaner
    - Uninstalled unnecessary filler programs
    - minimized start-up programs
    - turned off power saving option for wifi
    - previousy attempted to install a dual boot of Linux Ubuntu (to see if there was a performance improvement as a result), but kept getting error messages. i have since uninstalled anything related to Ubuntu.

    Does anyone have any other suggestions?

    Try booting your live linux distro and running the memory test. Sounds like it could be faulty RAM.

    I don't understand.
    My linux never worked.
    All of its files have since been removed.
    But this problem pre-dated the linux install attempt.

    What I mean is to boot from the live media and used the advanced options to run a Memory test in a "native" mode.

    Eg. If I boot my Ubuntu 10.04LTS disk, and press spacebar when it shows the little man with the keyboard, it gives me extra options for install etc. One of these options is to run a full memory test to check the RAM. This is what you're looking for. DIagnose your RAM and you may find all your problems can be solved by replacing / cleaning the RAM module.

    agree with others that it could be either faulty RAM or the connector to the Motherboard.
