Which Laptop?

First, I know nothing about computers other than how to turn them off/on. So be gentle and please try to speak in laymen terms so that my tiny brain can understand.

I'm homeschooling my 4th and 6th grader this year and I am in need of buying two laptops that is inexpensive, can handle streaming video and sometimes will have video games played on them. What laptop do I need? Is one brand better than the other? I have a budget of $1,000 total to spend (that budget will also include a printer).

I've seen those computers that have the hard drive in the moniter, do you think this is a better option since the screen is huge, are these any better than desktops or laptops?
