In advanced mode, one can add software.
    That's nice.
But, where can I find and start the software I installed this way?
For instance: I installed Abiword. The machine tells me that Abiword is installed correctly and is ready to use.
But where can I find it?

We really need a WIKI or a faq. Yes, people should search, but it's not always easy to know what to search on for things like this one.

Right-click and select it from the menu which appears. This assumes you have right-click menus enabled - http://www.aspireoneuser.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=28#p158

Some software may not show up: if so it's likely to be command-line software rather than GUI software. Start it in terminal by typing its name.

There is also a way of adding applications to your simplified menus on the standard Acer desktop: search the forums for 'group app xml' and you will find the instructions somewhere several pages in!

Press "Alt + F2", type "xfterm4" and hit Return to get a command prompt.

    Now type the following:
    Code:
    which appname
And hit return, where appname is the name of the program installed, i.e. for Skype:

    Code:
    which skype
And the prompt reports that the executable Skype file resides at usr/bin/skype. :D

    Postback if any problems. :|

    So now I've added Wine.
And tried to find/start it, in the same way Abiword (see above)
But this doesn't seem to work in that way.
    How can I start Wine?
And, if succeeded, how can I install a windows app and run it?

(Lots of questions, I know, but I'm very enthousiastic about my AAO!)

    Hi ArievH,

Its been a while since i've fiddled with Wine, but if i remember correctly once its installed you can just go ahead and install Windows apps as you would in a Windows system. You only need to open Wine to mess with the config i believe if you run into troubles. There is a Wine thread somewhere that explains it better than i have.

Just remember, regardless of how well programs run under Wine, native Linux apps will run better, so at least aim to try the Linux software first!

    Hello Andysan,

Well, I tried to install a Windows app, but I didn't succeed.
How can I see if Wine is "running" at all?
Trying to start Wine with alt-F2, results in no response from the Acer whatsoever.
    Does Wine startup at boot-up?
If so, how can I check this?

I tried to install Lotus Organizer. (imo the best agenda-app ever!) Would be nice to have it running on my Acer.
