Using Alternate Back-up discs?

    Alright so I have an Acer Aspire One, and have a pretty big problem with it (several actually, details don't matter) and the only surefire easiest way to fix this is by restoring the laptop to some before point or factory settings. Problem is, all the previous restore points are gone, I never created back up discs because I didn't have an external disc drive at the time, and I can't run the System Restore program. My dad has the same model I do and his is working fine. My question is, if he creates a set of back-up discs for his laptop, can I use them on my laptop to restore it? And I do have an external disc drive now. So does anyone know?
