yes , as you heard it! my little aspire one is runnung Ubuntu Netbook remix fo eeepc very well. I've to install no drivers, NOTHING, it worked out of the box (atheros wifi included), if you want to use a newbbie friendly linux distribution, this is the way.

    what do you need???

    1.- 1Gb usb drive (i've used a kingston 2gb, and a sandisk 1gb in my tests)
2.- a copy of ubuntu-eee-8.04.1.iso, you can download by torrent on mininova.org this is a completely legal torrent :)
3.- unetbootin-eeeubuntu-windows-238.exe (Google is your friend)
    4.- a computer running windows.

-do not burn the iso image, we are going to use it as is.
-you need to run unetbootbin to copy all files from ubuntu iso to usb stick.
-that's all!; now you can boot your usb stick on your AAO and follow instructions.

    saludos amigos.
    sorry my english...

Sweet! I'll give this a shot tonight. Have you encountered any non-functionality yet?

yeah i installed it, but as i swapped out the wifi card to a broadcom dell 1390 i had to install ndiswrapper and use the windows xp drivers to use it and the lan is not detected, did you have to do anything to get the lan up and running?

Hi, these are good new indeed, can you please post more details about any hardware problems/things that don't work OOB? The wiki page for Ubuntu on Aspire One shows quite some things not working. I'm holding back on buying an Aspire One because I really want a "full" Ubuntu OS, not just a limited version like Linpus.

    Thanks,

    Vasco

Hi, for the guys who already installed Ubuntu Remix:
    Boot time?
Did you test a skype call to see whether mic/audio is working?
    StandBy/Hibernate?
    Wi-fi with WPA networks?

    Thanks

Boot time is pretty good maybe 45 seconds max.

Not used skype yet so cannot cofirm audio.

Yes stand by works. Although its a little hit and miss on waking up.

One slight problem so far is the flickering of the background when scrolling in the OS. Not a big deal tho.

I tried the eee-ubuntu back in July and it was slow as #%. Glad to hear it has improved! :)

I think like most I have questions on the hardware support:
    - Is audio fully working (mic, in, out, cut-off)? Does it use ALSA 1.0.18?
    - Are the card readers fully working (SD, xD, SonyMS and hotplug)?
    - What kind of battery life do you get?
    - Is ath5k or madwifi used for the wifi?

    Thanks guys!

you can get back the blinking wifi LED just edit /etc/sysctl.conf

    and replace this line:
    Code:
    dev.wifi0.ledpin=1
    with this:
    Code:
    dev.wifi0.ledpin=3
OK... just change the 1 for 3.

oh!.. btw.. you can put -3 and get led always on.

    saludos.

Besides the slower boot-up time, is there any performance hit (and if so, how much RAM are you running on)?

Hi, I have tried to install that.

It gaves me a crash when it was in the typical windows of ubuntu in where is loading the installation system. The error say something like:

/sbin/modprobe: abnormal exit (i'm not sure if it's the file, I'm talking by memory)

And it let me like a terminal in command line. I don't know what to do going on/start the install.

    Thank you!

This morning, I installed Ubuntu-eee on my AA1 (w/ 512MB and 8GB SSD). I used the files from http://www.ubuntu-eee.com/ (unetbootin-eeeubuntu-windows-276.exe as opposed to v238 as mentioned in the OP). My thoughts so far:

    THE GOOD:

    • Standby has been reliable and resumes faster than Linpus[/*:m:1swyqc24]
    • Wifi works even after Standby and with enterprise WPA2/PEAP (previously with Linpus, updating the network manager as described at viewtopic.php?f=34&t=1028 failed to get enterprise WPA2/PEAP to work)[/*:m:1swyqc24]
    • Overall performance is good... the GUI and apps are about as responsive as Linpus (some might be a tad slower, but it's not significantly different)[/*:m:1swyqc24]
    • Firefox 3 seems a little faster (even when tweaked for Linpus, it could be sluggish) [/*:m:1swyqc24]
    • Sound/brightness FN controls work fine[/*:m:1swyqc24]
    • Windows manager is much better than Linpus'[/*:m:1swyqc24]
    • Ubuntu automatic update works fine[/*:m:1swyqc24]
    • No more dependency issues (Linpus' Achilles heel)[/*:m:1swyqc24]
    • Power consumption about the same for moderate-intensive tasks (10-13 W)[/*:m:1swyqc24]

    THE BAD:

    • When resuming from standby and hibernate, there's no sound afterwards (this appears to be a known issue, but I haven't yet tried applying the fixes I've read about)[/*:m:1swyqc24]
    • Takes ~40 seconds to boot (but with standby working and faster than Linpus, I'm not too concerned)[/*:m:1swyqc24]
    • Wifi switch/LED not working (but wifi itself is fine)[/*:m:1swyqc24]
    • Power consumption slightly higher for light work (Linpus minimum was 7-9 W while Ubuntu is 9-10 W)[/*:m:1swyqc24]
    • Fan runs more during light work (than with Linpus)[/*:m:1swyqc24]

    OTHER COMMENTS:

    • Haven't tested microphone, webcam, or external monitor[/*:m:1swyqc24]
    • Initially I couldn't mount USB flash drives (without resorting to sudo mount -t vfat /dev/sdb1 ./[folder]/). A Linux-guru-friend figured it out: /etc/fstab was trying to automatically mount an optical drive; commenting out the last line in the file (/dev/sdb1 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto,exec,utf8 0 0) solved the problem [/*:m:1swyqc24]
    • Standby didn't work at first, the Network manager originally took several minutes to display any networks, and I couldn't mount SDHC cards. Updating with the Update Manager appears to have fixed those problem[/*:m:1swyqc24]

    VERDICT:

I liked the AA1 before, but IMO it's much better with Ubuntu-eee. Linpus' 12 second boot time is mucho cool, but just about everything about Ubuntu is superior. Not having sound after standby is a PITA, but hopefully that'll be resolved soon.

P.S. Not to be a jerk, but shouldn't this thread be in the Ubuntu forum?

Yeah I have...well it has started showing networks now. Have to go to school again to try it out again since I don't have my own wireless at home. Another thing though....I'm behind a dhcp server that needs the mac address to assign the ip so I have to do this manually using the ip I get on my desktop. The problem is though that when I plug in the cable the network manager doesn't show a connection at all so I have nowhere to type it in and I can't seem to find anywhere to create a new connection either. Anyway to do this through the console or anything like that?
