    Hi all
Clean install of Ubuntu NBR 9.10 onto my 8gb SSD Acer last night via bootable USB drive.
It was previously running stock Linpus. I have Ubuntu NBR 9.04 on a dual boot on my other Acer but wanted to try this out on separate machine first.

All seemed to go well, and it all boots up, and can connect to my home network by ethernet etc.

However i cannot get the wireless to connect (says its disabled in the network icon in top bar).
Tried to manuall add entry in network manager but not joy.

Some googling last night kept pointing to Broadcom driver issues and to install additional packages. Tried these but stil no joy. Not surprising really as the network driver in my Acer is not broadcom (its Realtek).

Anyone care to point me in the right direction?
    Cheers

So strange indeed, since I own exactly one of your AAO models (AOA150-aw) and wifi worked out the box without any kind of modifications since the stock kernel comes with the ath5k drivers. May be you can try to load that module manually by typing 'sudo modprobe ath5k' and see if it turns wifi on.

    Actally - stoopid question time.

Lets assume that the correct drivers are installed. Its still showing as disabled - how do i go about enabling it?

That's the way it should be, when using modprobe nothing gets displayed on the terminal. After modprobing ath5k module, try to run 'sudo iwconfig', that will list all the interfaces available on your system. You've got to look for an interface called 'wlan0', that's the name that ath5k names the atheros card. After that you can set the interface on by typing,

    Code:
    sudo ifconfig wlan0 up
After that network manager should list the wireless netwoks available. This can also be done by typing

    Code:
    sudo iwlist wlan0 scan
    on a terminal.

    A ha.

Splendid. Now we are getting somewhere.

I can see it up and now prompting for my network key.

I will reboot and see what happens from scratch.

Many thanks for the pointers :)

Wireless seems very temperamental on NBR 9.10 running from USB with my Acer A150 & Atheros card.
Is currently working OK on the original Linpus on the hard drive.

    This small tweak helped me.

I added the acer_wmi module to the blacklist:

    sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
    blacklist acer_wmi

I just installed UNR on my D250. It doesn't see my wifi card at all to my knowledge. Does anyone know how to make it see the wifi card?

    Any help is appreciated.

    Thanks.

Just one more tidbit of information. If you have an ethernet cable plugged in then wireless will disconnect. At least this was the case on the early AAOs. In short, you couldn't have wired and wireless at the same time.

im also having problems getting it to see my wifi.
it can see the device ,and its mac address.

it seems like it may not be switched on,but if that were the case would it be able to see the mac addy?

theres no lights to show the device is switched on,and network connections doesnt see it.

might it be a driver issue?

    anyone got any advice?

    SOLVED!!!!
im going to admit my stupididty here....network connections didnt work for some reason, but i clicked on the icon in the top toolbar, and that showwed WIFI devices....i clicked on my router and connected

I seem to be having intermittent problems with the wifi connection too...

One thing which may be contributing is accidentally pushing the wifi slide casuing it to switch off!

However the wifi also appaers to drop off when power saver mode engages even when a network drive is mounted and files are copying over!

Does anyone have similar problems and a resolution?

Same problem here with the AAO D250.
When transferring data from a mounted network drive, the wireless card seems to freeze after a few minutes. Only solution to get it working again is to reboot.

    I've googled a lot, but can't find a solution..
